Rabbits 2026

The "Rabbits" is a weekly men's 9-hole competition for high handicappers (players with a WHS Handicap Index of 15.0 or over) who are members of Blainroe Golf Club. The "Rabbits" is all about participation - every time you play you get a shot back - to a maximum of 3 - unless you are in the top five. The winner gets cut four, so the prizes get spread around. We play almost every Friday evening from the Spring to late September.
Our Rabbits Captain for 2026
is Brian J Connor who follows Dave Smyth. Brian has chosen
Ian Hook to be his Rabbits
Vice-Captain.
The Rabbits is a social event as much as a competition, so try to play with different people each week - get to know other members. We always love to see some new faces. Are you a member in Blainroe and a bit hesitant about entering a club competition? - the Rabbits is a great place to start where you'll meet plenty of fellow hackers - or has your handicap slipped out? Do you know a member who seldom plays and you might be able to encourage? Over 300 members are actually eligible to be Rabbits.
The first round of the Rabbits took place on Friday 20th March this year.
The clear winner of Rabbits Golfer of the Year for 2025 was Duncan Brasier who was well ahead of everyone else.
The Captain's Prize to the Rabbits was also won by Duncan Braiser to finish up a great season for him.
The winner of our 15-hole knockout matchplay competition for 2025 was Jason O'Connor, who beat Brian O'Connor in the final.
Every year we aim to have at least one away competition. Last year Dave arranged a trip to Coolattin and Mount Wolesely on Thursday and Friday 5th and 6th June.
Several of us also participate in the Wednesday Fourball Draw and the Wednesday Group Tour that regularly has an outing in May. This year the group will go to Dungarvan. Contact Brian Nally if you would like to join this outing.
For a bit of variety, we traditionally have a course swap with Wicklow Rabbits, usually in August. Our rabbits usually find it to be quite a challenge.
The annual competition against Wicklow Rabbits
takes place towards the end of the season, usually mid to late October. The top 10 in the GoY
are automatically selected plus a couple of Captain's picks. There
are usually some additional places as not all 10 are certain to be
available.
Last year, Wicklow managed to remain the
cupholders.
The Legends is another group of high handicappers, mostly from the Rabbits, that play during the Winter. The Legends normally continue until the Rabbits kick off which this year is Friday 21st March 2025.
